HOW TO HELP VETERANS
The FRA Veterans Service Foundation offers several opportunities for members and others to be active in their communities and help veterans.

FRA VSO Program
The FRA VSO program supports members via volunteer representatives accredited through the VA General Counsel’s Office. To become accredited an individual must demonstrate knowledge of VA benefits programs including laws, rules and associated policies. This proficiency is garnered either through the successful completion of VA approved courses or through years of experience in the processing of veterans’ claims. While prior military service in not required for accreditation, a general knowledge beyond Department of Defense structure and military service is necessary to be an effective VSO.

In addition, the Association will, subject to review, cover the costs of training and certain other expenses associated with their participation in this program.
Voluntary applicants for the program will be screened by the National Veterans Service Officer (NVSO) prior to beginning VSO training in conjunction with becoming certified to assist individuals at the local level.

Accredited representatives for the FRA can assist any service member, veteran, spouse or dependent who has executed/filed a proper VA Form 21-22 (Appointment of Veterans’ Service Organization as Claimant’s Representative) in all claims matters before the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

FRA VAVS Program
Established in 1946, the Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) is the largest volunteer program in the Federal Government, with over 350 supporting organizations supplementing staff and resources in all areas of patient care and support plus the National Cemetery Administration to serve our Nation’s veterans.

Through the years, VAVS volunteers have contributed millions of hours of service. Without this program and those who volunteer, VA will be forced to provide funding to cover the costs of hiring additional employees. This, in return, would likely reduce funding for other programs needed to support our veterans.

Community Assistance programs assist veteran patients by augmenting staff, leading end of life care programs, foster care, community-based volunteer programs, hospital wards, nursing homes, and veteran outreach centers. Recently the VAVS outreach has been included in work done by volunteers at our National Cemeteries and other programs of the National Cemetery Administration.
